Community
Supported Agriculture (CSA) - individuals, families or groups support
the farm budget in advance and receive weekly what is seasonably ripe. This
reduces waste and risk for the farmer, allowing her to focus on quality care of
soils, crops, animals, co-workers and on the customer.
Farmsteading
- a lifestyle of simple, agrarian self-sufficiency.
Genetically
engineered food - a food substance that has foreign genes inserted into its
genetic code. Genetic engineering can be done with plants, animals or
micro-organisms. Scientists can move desire genes from one plant into another,
or even from an animal to a plant or vice versa. It is estimated that over 70%
of the foods in U.S. and Canadian grocery stores contain genetically engineered

Heirloom
plant - an open-pollinated plant grown from seed over many generations;
often passed down through families.
Natural
building - present in or produced by nature, not
artificial or synthetic. Examples
Organic
food - crops produced without the use of conventional petroleum-based
pesticides and artificial fertilizers; animals reared without the routine use of
antibiotics and growth hormones; food that is not genetically modified.
Self-sufficient
- refers to the state of not requiring outside aid, support; where nothing is
consumed outside of what is produced by the self-sufficient individuals.
Sustainable
- the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely.
